  • Skin purging occurs when a new skincare product causes the skin to break out. Essentially, the skin speeds up renewal and any dead skin or sebum trapped under the skin may surface up as bumps like acne. This generally occurs 3 to 6 weeks after introducing a new active like vitamin C, retinoids, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide. It resolves by itself in another 4 to 8 weeks so one need not withhold or discontinue the active ingredient being used. If it doesn't start resolving on its own, it may not be purging and one would need to consult a dermatologist. While the purge doesn’t happen with everyone, it is a possibility. To reduce skin purging, gradually introduce new products at a low dose and frequency.
